Definition: GDPR compliance refers to the adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a legal framework enacted by the European Union (EU) to regulate the collection, processing, and storage of personal data of individuals present in EU/EEA or outside the location.

Key Components:

  1. Data Protection Principles: GDPR outlines fundamental principles that govern the processing of personal data, including lawfulness, fairness, and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimization; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality; and accountability.
  2. Data Subject Rights: GDPR grants individuals various rights concerning their personal data, such as the right to access, rectification, erasure (the "right to be forgotten"), restriction of processing, data portability, and objection to processing.
  3. Compliance Measures: To achieve GDPR compliance, organizations must undertake various measures, including appointing a Data Protection Officer (DPO), conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), implementing privacy by design and by default, ensuring adequate security measures, obtaining valid consent for data processing, and establishing procedures for handling data breaches.
